(ANS– Rome) – The fourth Salesian to be created cardinal, Štěpán Trochta was a very distinctive figure. An emblem of the suffering endured by Central and Eastern Europe throughout the 20th century, persecuted first by Nazism and then by Communism, he was also the only Salesian cardinal to be nominated in pectore, since at the time of his first election reasons of expediency prompted Pope Paul VI not to make his choice public.

CHILDREN IN A FAMILY

THE MESSAGE OF THE RECTOR MAJOR, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, SDB

Rediscover the great value of closeness, friendship, and simple joy in everyday life, and the value of sharing, talking, and communicating.

(ANS – Rome) – Lawyer, Salesian of Don Bosco and bishop, first as Ordinary of the diocese of Valparaíso and then, for over twenty years, as Archbishop of Santiago (1961-1983) and Primate of Chile. Raúl Silva Henríquez (1907-1999), the third Son of Don Bosco to have been called by a Pontiff to serve the Church in the service of the cardinalate was all these things.

(ANS - Rome) – From a Province that has been giving many missionaries to the Salesian Congregation, especially in recent years, comes the young Ngo Duc Thuan Joseph. He is going on a journey of discovery in a land very different from his own and with not a few challenges, but, as he says, all his fears melt away when he thinks that "with God nothing is impossible".

(ANS - Rome) - Life as mission, mission as service: this is the assumption underlying the missionary option made by the young Salesian Cleric Joshua Tarere. A few days away from the 154th Salesian Missionary Expedition, this young Papuan tells ANS his story, doubts and prospects in view of his next destination: South Sudan.

(ANS – Rome) – The second Son of Don Bosco awarded the red hatwas the Salesian August Hlond, today recognised by the Church as Venerable. A key player in one of the most dramatic periods in the history of the twentieth century, Cardinal Hlond was, in the words of the current Rector Major and future Cardinal, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, "a virtuous man, a shining example of a Salesian religious and a generous, austere pastor, capable of prophetic visions and obedient to the Church", who "cultivated poverty and practised justice towards the poor and needy."

SPECIAL REPORTS

  • RMG - St. Francis de Sales Communicator: All for Love

(ANS – Rome) - The figure of St. Francis de Sales, chosen by Don Bosco as an example of a communicator, teaches that communication is a matter of the heart. In his expression, "Everything in the Church is love: everything lives in love, for love, and of love," we understand his revolution in the way of communicating, and how communication becomes fruitful when it allows communion and the exchange of one's experiences in a path of accompaniment and collaboration in God's project.

  • WHAT A GIFT TIME IS!

THE MESSAGE OF THE VICAR OF THE RECTOR MAJOR,
    Fr Stefano Martoglio, SDB

The beginning of the new year is illuminated in our liturgy by the ancient formula with which the Israelite priests blessed the people: "May the Lord bless you, and keep you. May the Lord show His face to you, and have mercy on you. May the Lord turn His countenance to you, and give you peace."
