Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea – March 2024 – The first session of the Dreamers' Camp was held from 1 to 3 March at the Don Bosco Technological Institute in Boroko, on the theme "Transforming dreams: dream, live, love like Don Bosco", inspired by the Rector Major's Strenna 2024. About 500 participants, including students, staff and student facilitators, gathered to study Don Bosco's dream at nine years of age and the elements of Salesian youth spirituality. The event was conceived and accompanied by the Salesians and the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians and the pastoral team on the occasion of the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the foundation of the institute and the Bicentenary of Don Bosco's childhood dream. The second session of the meeting will take place from 8 to 10 March.
Cartago, Costa Rica – March 2024 - The "First Lego League" was held on 2 March, the largest robotics festival in Costa Rica, where the "Clubhouse Sales Cartago" team won the first place nationwide in the "Challenge" category, the most difficult. "Clubhouse Sales Cartago" is the flagship social project of the Salesian St Dominic Savio Centre, which is part of an international learning network "The clubhouse Network". The Salesians have joined this initiative as part of the preventive system, where innovative teachings and practice go hand in hand with technology. In coordination with schools and university institutes in the province, the Salesian Center in Cartago supports more than 300 low-income children and young people so that they can have free access to STEAM tools and opportunities for their professional and social development. The "Clubhouse Sales Cartago" team comprises students from schools in the province, who prepared months earlier with their innovative project consisting of recovering Costa Rican culture, lost in time, using tools such as technology and art, creating a prototype of a rotating platform with typical dances, and a QR code that leads to a page that contains cultural information and videos. The judges decided on the winners, among 34 participating teams, taking into account different aspects such as STEAM skills and Core Values (core values of the "First Lego League"); teamwork, inclusion, impact, fun, discovery and innovation.
Chennai, India – February 2024 - Fr Gianni Rolandi, representing the Rector Major, began the Extraordinary Visitation to the Salesian Province of Chennai, India (INM), located in southern India. Started on 29 February 2024 in Fujairah, a town where the Salesians established a community comprising a parish and a school, the Extraordinary Visitation represents a crucial moment for the INM Province, as Fr Rolandi himself pointed out. The Extraordinary Visitor will travel to all the Salesian communities in the INM Province, ending his visitation on 31 May 2024. On 5 March Fr Rolandi met the Provincial and his Council and the following day the Rectors and other people in charge in the INM Province, meetings that form the basis for the extensive planned itinerary, providing a platform for collaborative discussions and fostering unity among the Salesian communities in the region. An important moment opens in the history of the Province of Chennai, which promises to reinvigorate and strengthen ties within the Salesian community. The Extraordinary Visitation by Fr Rolandi is destined to leave a lasting impact, fostering spiritual growth and unity among the Salesians and strengthening the vitality and mission of the Province of Chennai.
Kigali, Rwanda – March 5, 2024 – A sharing meeting is taking place at the Don Bosco hospitality centre in Kigali between the Work Service Officers (JSOs) in the Salesian Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) and the sector coordination team, in order to identify challenges and develop potential solutions related to the employment of young Salesian students. The meeting is organised by the Department of Work Services of the Planning and Development Office, with the support of Don Bosco Tech Africa. The agenda of the work includes discussions and comparisons on various topics central to the mission of the JSOs, such as: the identification of gaps between the skills taught in Vocational Training Centres and those required by industries; the exploration of strategies to bridge these gaps and improve sector-oriented training; the creation of networks and partnerships; the sharing of best practices; and the creation of work plans. On 8 March 2024, JSOs will meet with key stakeholders to exchange best practices that will shape the future relationship between VTC and the labour market. The Heads of Work Services operate under the aegis of on Bosco Tech Africa", the body that supervises all Salesian VTCs in Africa, and play a fundamental role in Salesian VTCs, bringing students closer to the labour market.
Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea – March 2024 – On 2 March, more than seventy students and a large group of leaders and teachers from Catholic institutions participated in the media education seminar that took place at the headquarters of the Catholic Bishops' Conference, in the Waigani district, in Port Moresby. During the meeting, which opened with a welcome by Fr Ambrose Pereira, SDB, Coordinator of Social Communication in the East Asia-Oceania Region, numerous interesting topics were addressed, from Pope Francis' Message for World Communications Day 2024, to the use of Artificial Intelligence. Participants had the opportunity to attend several sessions, focusing on topics such as poster creation, the importance of logos and photography. Such seminars are encouraged by the Salesians, SIGNIS and all those who are committed to spreading the "Good News" through the media. For this reason, on Saturday, 23 March, a new seminar has already been scheduled, dedicated to the press, which will be hosted by the St Charles Lwanga Secondary School in Gerehu.
Makati, Philippines – March 2024 – With a vibrant demonstration of friendship, athleticism and sportsmanship, the "Boscolympics 2024" took place from 1-3 March at the Don Bosco Technical Institute in Makati. The three-day sporting event brought together young people from all the Salesian works in the Northern Province (FIN) to compete in different sports, including football, basketball, volleyball, futsal, table tennis, badminton and chess.
