Italy – Closing of Summer Camps

(ANS – Turin) – The photo was taken in 1948 at the end of the Summer activities called “Estate dei Ragazzi”, in the Mother House of Turin, in the main playground of Valdocco. In the picture it is worth noting the great number of young people assisted by the presence of Salesians, on one side, and by the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, on the other.

(ANS – Agua de Dios) – A School for people suffering from Hansen Disease (known also as leprosy) in Agua de Dios, Colombia, run by the Salesians. In the photo, which is dated 1950 and was presented at the “Charity Photographic Exhibition” organized in Turin on the occasion of the Holy Year, a priest is seen in the middle, with a group of musicians. In  1891 Fr. Michele Unia commenced his work at the service of the sick and the youth. The Salesians were in charge of the parish, which was attended by about 10.000 faithful and looked after 6.000 sick people. In the town of  Guaramayo they also ran a school for 450 healthy children, born to people suffering from Hansen Disease.

(ANS - Hong Kong) - Visit of the Rector Major, Fr Renato Ziggiotti, to the St. Louis School in 1955.

Peru - Lima – This photo was taken in 1949 in the formation house of Magdalena del Mar - Lima. In it are seen bishops and priests, Salesian aspirants and novices. Of special significance is the presence of Mgr. Octavio Ortiz Arrieta SDB whose cause of beatification and canonization is in progress (the sixth in the front row, from left). Mgr. Ortiz Arrieta is flanked by two other Salesian bishops: Msgr. Fortunato Chirchigno (fifth) and Msgr. Víctor Álvarez (seventh).
