Papua New Guinea – Honouring legacy and dreams: triple celebration of the Don Bosco Technical School
Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea – August 2024 – The campus of the Don Bosco Technical School (DBTs) in Gabutu, Port Moresby, was filled with joy and merriment to celebrate, from 14 to 16 August, three major events: the 39th anniversary of its foundation, the Trade Olympics and a special Family Day. The participants were welcomed by the Principal of the school, Fr Pedro Sachitula, who gave a welcome speech. The days were characterised by shows, games, fundraisers and events designed for families and, of course, by the celebrations for Don Bosco's birthday, 16 August. These events not only honored the school's legacy, but also inspired students and the community at large to continue fighting for their dreams and the common good.
Yangon, Myanmar – August 2024 – In the afternoon of 24 August, 38 new members of ADMA made their solemn promise to Mary Help of Christians, in the presence of Fr Bosco Nyi Nyi, MYM Superior, in the Church of the Child Jesus, in Yangon, Myanmar. In the morning, at 9 o'clock, the Superior had also held a conference on the spirituality of ADMA. Subsequently, there were moments of silent personal prayer, meditation, confession, Eucharistic adoration and the rosary, as organised by the head of the Salesian Family Commission, Fr John Gam Seng, SDB. The Congregation was very happy to attend the ceremony. At the moment there are already 99 members of ADMA in Myanmar.
Pattaya, Thailand – August 2024 – Every year, the Catholic Education Council of Thailand, which brings together Catholic schools and those run by religious and lay people, organises a seminar, now in its 53rd edition. For 2024, the theme chosen was: "Walking with young people on a new path". The event took place from 18 to 21 August at the Asia Hotel in Pattaya, in the province of Chonburi, and was attended by several representatives of the various groups of the Salesian Family of Thailand. In particular, on the final day, the Salesians took part in the Best Practices session. Fr Boonlert Paneetatthayasai, Superior of the Province of Thailand (THA), focused on the Preventive System, while Mrs Wiramon Buadaeng, representative of the Mary Help of Christians School in Sam Phran, presented her work on "Building the skills of students", which is the result of the application of the Salesian Preventive System in schools. This talk received great attention from the participants in the seminar. Don Bosco's educational methods, in fact, are still modern and can be applied in the formation of today's young people.
Colombia – August 2024 – Saturday 24 August, 165 Leaders from the Oratories and Youth Centres of the St Luis Bertrand Salesian Province of Medellín, Colombia (COM) met for a formation opportunity whose objective was to strengthen the educative and pastoral proposal based on the needs of children, young people and their families, starting from the guidelines presented within the Provincial Oratory Program. This meeting, led by the Provincial Oratory Commission, the SYM Animation team and the Provincial Council, was held at the zonal level in the following locations: the Don Bosco Social Centre in Barranquilla (North Zone), the Santo Domingo Savio School in La Ceja (Central Zone) and the Don Bosco Formation Centre in Cali (South Zone and Eje Cafetero). During the meeting, the participants explored chapters III and IV of "The Oratory-Youth Centre", presented by the Youth Ministry Sector to all Salesian Works around the world, which offers a challenge to strengthen the network of the eleven Oratories and Youth Centres of the Province for the benefit of the most needy children and young people in Colombia.
