New conflicts and unresolved crises continue to force millions of people to flee, fuelling this phenomenon. According to the Global Trends report, the vast majority of refugees are hosted in countries neighbouring those of the crisis, 75% have been hosted in low- and middle-income countries, which together produce less than 20% of the world's income, while 21% are sheltered in less developed countries, already in economic difficulties.
The world map of crises
Particularly severe is the crisis in areas such as Sudan where the devastating conflict has resulted in over 7 million new internally displaced people and nearly 2 million cross-border refugees in the last year alone.
Similar situations are observed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Myanmar, with millions of people forced to flee the violence.
The largest crisis remains the Syrian one with 13.8 million people still fleeing.
According to the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre, the number of people who flee while remaining within their own countries has increased by 50% in the last five years and has reached 68.3 million.
Iran, Turkey, Colombia, Germany and Pakistan are the countries that host the largest number of refugees: 3.8 million, 3.3 million, 2.9 million, 2.6 million and 2 million respectively.
