Cabezo de Torres, Spain – June 2024 – The Salesians in Cabezo de Torres have re-established their band. It was founded in 1957 by Salesian Fr Filiberto Peris, who began the Band of Horns and Drums atf the Salesian School in Cabezo de Torres, thanks to the valuable collaboration of Mrs. Carolina Codorniú, who financed the purchase of the instruments. In 2022, the Salesian school enthusiastically resumed the initiative, re-.establishing the band with current music students. The group mainly accompanies the Virgin in the procession of Mary Help of Christians, but the joy and desire of the youngsters to fill the school and the city with music means that little by little they are daring to make some musical auditions, such as the welcome to the Vice-Provincial of the Salesian María Auxiliadora Province who was visiting the town. They performed the Hymn to Don Bosco, congratulations to the Cabezo de Torres Youth Music Group on its 40th anniversary, a group that, in turn, was founded by Salesian Fr Salvador Olivella in 1982. In 2024, 67 years after its foundation, and coinciding with the 200th anniversary of Don Bosco's childhood dream, the Saint Dominic Savio Band returned to parade through the streets of the town with almost 30 children and young people from 8 to 17 years old.
Quito, Ecuador - In a gesture of solidarity and commitment to the protection of the rights of the Amazonian peoples of Sucumbíos and Orellana, the Salesian parish of Mary Help of Christians of El Girón, Quito, welcomed several groups that organised special days of prayer and fasting held from 26 May to 5 June. The aim of this activity is to raise awareness about the right to water, good living and health that communities in the East should have and that are violated by oil exploitation. Brother Txarli Azcona, a Capuchin missionary who works alongside Amazonian communities, commented that the goal of this day is to raise public awareness of current environmental policies as they put health at risk, contaminating water and food produced locally and killing the biodiversity of the jungle. During the days, moments of personal and group prayer were held to raise a prayer for peace, justice and the protection of the common home and human rights in the Amazon. Participants joined in an act of voluntary fasting, as a symbol of empathy and awareness towards the difficulties that many Amazonian communities face in their struggle for justice and dignity. Young university students, representatives of religious groups and people from civil society were present in the María Auxiliadora Parish to support this activity and learn more about the reality that these communities are going through.
