India - We are #GenerationRestoration

Bangalore, India – June 2024 – This year, World Environment Day (WED) on 5 June, drew our attention to the issues of land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience. As the generation that inherits a host of environmental problems, it is critical that we, and especially young people, grasp the importance of restoring and preserving the land, soil, and water sources. Our futures depend on our actions.

Limerick, Ireland - June 2024 - On 9 June, at the Salesian parish of Mary Help of Christians in Limerick, Bishop Brendan Leahy, Bishop of Limerick, ordained Salesian Mulugeta Kirato to the diaconate. The ordination of the young Salesian, who completed his theological studies at the Pontifical University of Maynooth, was attended by many friends, family and Salesians.

Lisbon, Portugal – June 2024 - About 50 Salesian educators and communicators participated in the Salesian Days of Communication, held on 7 June at the Salesians in Manique. With the theme "Artificial Intelligence: the new frontier of communication in the school environment", a group of speakers, including journalists, communicators and teachers, presented some notions about this new technology, opportunities, challenges and applications. Fr Javier Valiente, SDB, Delegate for Social Communication for the Salesians in Spain; Octávio Carmo, Vaticanist and journalist of the Agência Ecclesia; Joana Belez, deputy audio and multimedia director of the "Grupo Impresa"; Bruna Ferreira, storyteller and Content Manager of Quidgest; Rodrigo Castro, founder and CEO of Educa-te, Carla Nave and Ana Marta Flores, researchers of the iNova Media Lab; João Filipe Matos, former full professor at the University of Lisbon, and Pedro Cabral, director of the NAU platform, of the Foundation for Science and Technology, presented their views on the impact that Artificial Intelligence is having in communication and education, and in all areas of human activity, culture, economy and politics. In the afternoon, some AI tools and the NAU Platform for teacher training were presented. At the end of the meeting, the Provincial of the Salesians in Portugal, Fr Tarcízio Morais, argued that AI, as a tool, has the potential to help educators. “Especially as educators, I think it is up to us to have the creative capacity to use these tools, but also the ability to guide our students towards their use with a critical, ethical sense and for the enhancement of others”, the Provincial said.

Dodoma, Tanzania – June 2024 – From 5 to 7 June, the Salesian Province of Tanzania (TZA) organised the first edition of the "Salesian Sports", which had as its theme: "The Dream that makes you dream" and which involved all the institutes of the Province. The Don Bosco campus in Dodoma has become a hive of sports activities, with over 300 participants and 32 leaders. Boys and girls have been involved in different disciplines, such as basketball, football, volleyball and netball. For many it was an opportunity to meet and test themselves. Also present at the event were Fr Michael Muia, Provincial Delegate for Youth Ministry, and Fr Valerain Kway, Delegate for the Salesian Family in TZA Province. At the end of the day, after the tournaments and a moment of prayer, the winning teams were rewarded. 

Cape Town, South Africa – June 2024 – The evangelisation team of Our Lady of the Rosary Parish in Hanover Park organised a children's workshop on the Laudato Si' Movement on 9 June. Prepared and animated by all the parish catechists, led by Mrs. Jane (MARFAM), all the children of the parish involved in catechesis participated in the workshop. Ms Lucinda, from the Salesian parish evangelisation team, led by parish priest Fr John Thompson, SDB, shared the deep motivations for this action of the Laudato Si'  Movement: “Our children are the future and we need to make sure they know how to take care of our world and God's Creation and how they can contribute positively to the care of our common home.” Since last January 2024, the 'Eco Ubuntu' project has been undertaken in all the communities of the Salesian Vice-Province of Southern Africa (AFM), located in eSwatini, Lesotho, South Africa, involving most of the 6 parishes and 18 schools of the Salesian network. Some Salesian institutions also join the Don Bosco Green Alliance global network which is an integral member of the Laudato Si 'Movement, connecting and inspiring 630 Don Bosco institutions in 88 countries around the world.

Palermo, Italy – June 2024 - Educational work of the Salesians of Palermo and educational mission of the Salesians of the Holy Land: this was the main theme of the evening for Peace aimed at solidarity for education among "the peoples" of the Mediterranean. The event combined art and reflection involving, among other things, artists of the choral Ensemble from the Conservatory of Palermo, the DBsons musical group  of the Salesians of Sicily and the testimony of Fr Emanuele Vezzoli, Vice-Provincial of the  Middle East Province (MOR). The event was opened in the school courtyard by the director of the educational work, Fr Domenico Saraniti, followed by musical performances. Then there was the testimony of Fr Vezzoli, who shared the difficulties and hopes of the Salesian communities in a region like the Middle East marked by conflicts. "The Salesian educational mission," said Fr Vezzoli "is based on the principle of educating to become ‘good Christians and upright citizens’", peacemakers with a broad perspective. Fr Vezzoli was given a collection, an expression of the esteem and affection of those present for the Holy Land. Full of emotion, Fr Vezzoli said "This sum represents an important contribution to support the peace and assistance projects promoted by the Salesians in these war-torn areas where often the members of the Salesian community produce and distribute bread and anything else to feed the population." The event ended with an address from Fr Giovanni D’Andrea, Provincial of the Salesians of Sicily, who addressed the Salesian "good night" to those present.
