SPECIAL REPORTS

(ANS – Port Moresby) – Pope Francis has invited priests and consecrated to "smell the sheep." In preparation for the Salesian General Chapter 28 (GC28), Salesians are called to reach out to those who are waiting for us - the 'cast offs', child migrants, refugees, street boys and girls, people whose human rights and dignity are violated everyday, those caught up in networks of slavery and the loss of their freedom. Papua New Guinea has several of these.

(ANS - Rabaul) - Can one speak of a "spirituality of the playground" for the Salesians? From this question a long and interesting reflection of Msgr. Francesco Panfilo, SDB, archbishop of Rabaul, for whom the answer is naturally affirmative.

(ANS - Bangkok) - The Catholic presence in Thailand, a country with a large Buddhist majority, cannot help but deal with the issue of religious dialogue. And this is a task and issue the Salesians have not failed to address. At the same time, even within countries wherein Catholicism is more rooted, the spiritual Sons of Don Bosco bring, as they do, the testimony of their specific charism to the Church and to the local population.

(ANS – Rapolo) – Fr Valeriano Barbero, SDB, is a pioneer of the mission in Papua New Guinea.  The Salesian mission was launched in 1980 by Fr Valeriano Barbero, Fr Rolando Fernandez and Salesian brother Joseph Kramar. They started their work in Araimiri. Fr Barbero recently celebrated his 80th birthday and is now building spacious dormitories for students at the Don Bosco Agro-Ed Complex, Vunabosco, Rapolo. He shares here his spirituality and love for Our Blessed Mother that have been his source of strength and courage, especially when things were difficult.
