The BBH Province was represented by the Vicar of the Province, Fr José Ricardo Mole, by Carolina Neves, Head of Social Action, and by Tatiana Furtado, Executive Director of the Salesian social work 'CESAM-DF', who met the Second Lady of Brazil, Lu Alckmin, wife of National Vice-President Geraldo Alkmin and, above all, creator of the Social Project 'Artisan Bakery'.
This project, established over 20 years ago, aims to train young people and adults in socially vulnerable situations free of charge, offering them a new source of income and opportunities for personal and community transformation.
As a result of last November's meeting, the BBH Province will see the inclusion of three more of its centres in the 'Artisan Bakery' project; in the cities of Belo Horizonte, Pará de Minas and Palmas, joining the Salesian work CESAM-DF, which has already been participating in the initiative since last August.
For this very reason, a training session was held last Tuesday, 3 December 2024, with a number of staff, who were in charge of launching the social initiative in the three cities involved. The training first provided some theoretical information on the historical context of bread-making and essential hygiene practices, and then, in a collaborative and educational environment, followed a practical phase in which 10 types of bread, such as whole meal bread, herb bread and beetroot bread, were produced.
Upon returning to their respective Salesian works, the workers who received training on 3 December will in turn train other agents and people from their communities.
The 'Artisan Bakery' project, started in 2000, is now expanding to different parts of the country, with the aim of training families in socially vulnerable situations, offering a new source of income and opportunities for personal and community transformation. To date, the project has been responsible for the creation of 10,000 artisan bakeries and the training of more than 100,000 people.
