29 August 2024

(ANS – Munich) – The Salesians, their staff and the entire Salesian Family in Germany are mourning the death of Fr Herbert Bihlmayer, former Superior of the then Province of South Germany. Fr Bihlmayer died on 27 August  at the age of 89, after a long illness. "With his death we have lost a Salesian, a committed and visionary priest and educator, whose life and work have left a profound mark," write the Salesians of Germany.

Fr Bihlmayer  dedicated his life to the education and guidance of young people and the protection of Creation. In establishing the Don Bosco Foundation in 2001, he left a lasting legacy that will continue his commitment to the future of disadvantaged children and young people even after his death.

The Salesian was also the co-founder of the Aktionszentrum in Benediktbeuern, in 1969, which he managed until his appointment as Rector of the Benediktbeuern Monastery, in 1985. From 1973 to 1980, Fr Bihlmayer also worked as a university chaplain at the Catholic Foundation College in Benediktbeuern. Particularly noteworthy is his involvement in the foundation of the Zentrum für Umwelt und Kultur (ZUK) at Benediktbeuern, a centre for environmental education. From 1988 to 2011 he directed its support organisation.

In 1991, Fr Bihlmayer was appointed Superior of the then Province of South Germany and led the religious community through a period of change, always with a clear attention to the needs of young people. Even after his twelve-year term as Provincial, Fr Herbert Bihlmayer took on numerous positions of responsibility within the religious community and beyond, starting in 2003.

Fr Herbert Bihlmayer's commitment has had a lasting impact on the lives of many people. His deep trust in God, his humour, and his determination were compelling and motivating.
