The Convent of Santa Maria della Pace in Chieri

In 1642, thanks to the work of the Franciscan Friars Minor, who had settled in Chieri in 1626, the church dedicated to Santa Maria della Pace was built. The name was chosen as thanks for the end of the civil war.

The young John Bosco was also to arrive here. In 1834, had asked to be admitted to the Franciscans.

However, John Bosco changed his mind before entering the convent, following the direct advice of Fr Jospeh Cafasso. He then decided to adopt clerical dress by entering the seminary.

Fr Joseph Cafasso then advised him to complete the year of rhetoric and then to take the exam to enter the Chieri seminary. John Bosco passed the exam, which was held in Turin, and on 25 October he was vested in the cassock and on 30 October 1835 he presented himself to the seminary.
