Peru - When solidarity and aid can save lives and bring the message of Jesus

(ANS - Yurimaguas) - Peru is one of the six richest countries in terms of biodiversity in the world. It has 28 of the 32 climates in the world, and 25,000 species of flora. The Salesians are present in this beautiful and thriving part of the Peruvian Amazon where access is limited to the local communities. They work in the mission to bring joy, education and above all the proclamation of the Gospel to the many people who live in extreme poverty, both in the town of San Lorenzo and in the indigenous communities of Alto Marañón di Loreto.

As good bearers of the spirit of Don Bosco, Fr Román Olesinski and Fr Diego Clavijo bring the Word of God to various indigenous communities, among them the Achuar ethnic group. "Our mission is to educate and evangelize young people," says Fr Olesinski who has been travelling for 16 years to the corners of Amazonia. The Salesians also assist the Candoshi, Awajum and Quechuas population on the banks of the Marañón, Pastaza and Morona rivers.

Fr Diego Clavijo, Fr Nelso Vera (Parish Priest), and Brother José Gallego, run educational and pastoral activities in the Kuyuntsa mission. These brave Salesians face countless natural dangers over the great distances they have to travel, mainly by river. It takes several days to arrive in the different places they visit.

In San Lorenzo there is a Salesian House with three confreres, Fr Roman Olensinki (Rector), Fr Józef Kamza and Samuel Zamalloa. In the Don Bosco Oratory they open their doors to children and young people to participate in recreational, educational and spiritual activities.

Through the Fundación Don Bosco the Salesians of Peru are organizing a lottery as part of a solidarity campaign on behalf of the poorest people in Peruvian Amazonia. With the proceeds we try to improve conditions for the educational and pastoral work in the Salesian mission in the jungle of Loreto, in the municipality of San Lorenzo and in the indigenous communities of Kuyuntsa, where the sons of Don Bosco have been working for over 30 years.

Taking part in the Solidarity lottery for the Salesian Missions of Selva will not only restore joy but will help to transform lives.
