This last is perhaps the most appropriate and significant motivation for the "House of Bread" in Bethlehem.
With the outbreak of the second Intifada, this third reason has assumed a more prominent character. During the 42 days of the siege of Bethlehem in April 2002, the Salesian bakery was one of the few functioning and the only source of food for many families in the area. With the help of many friends and supporters from all around the world, this staple food was passed through windows and roofs during the curfew and the people did not have to leave their homes.
Since then, the Salesians have continued to distribute around 26,000 loaves of bread, for free, to almost 200 families in difficulty, either directly or in collaboration with other religious institutions. The bakery has been extended several times to increase production and ensure the high quality and the standard of work for both customers and workers. The bakers benefited moreover from various training courses given by internationally renowned bakers.
The bakery is always improving. In June some renovation work was done but there are other works of adaptation and accommodation still to be done, and for this they need support.
