The people of South Sudan thought their country was a godforsaken place. Lucia fled with her mother and siblings when their home was bombed. Archer, saving his life, lost his family. A three-year-old girl ran carrying a plate because she was eating when they attacked. In just one night, the Salesians took in 30,000 people, saving them from death.
Those living in Gumbo were also lucky: the civil wars in South Sudan left thousands dead. But still after 10 years, the refugees cannot return to their homes. They live in a camp that was supposed to be temporary and has become their only asylum. Thanks to the help of the Salesians, the children go to school, and the families receive food and medicine.
These are the stories of the refugees living in Gumbo, South Sudan; stories of violence, trauma, and poverty, but also of redemption, solidarity, and hope. The Salesian Missionary Foundation "Don Bosco" (Salezjanska Fundacja Misyjna "Don Bosco", in the original language), based in Warsaw, Poland has made a documentary film that aims to represent and make known this reality.
The documentary, lasting about 30 minutes, is available on YouTube in four languages: Italian, English, Spanish, and Polish, accompanied also by some short presentations in the respective languages.
