RMG - Salesian Historical Research no. 66

29 June 2016

(ANS - Rome) - "Salesian Historical Research" (RSS), is the bimonthly magazine of religious and civil History, published by the Salesian Historical Institute (ISS). No. 66 (January-June 2016) was published recently.

Salesians at risk of expulsion from France and condemnation in Rome in the letters of Don Bosco in 1880-1881 by Francesco Motto. The paper presents two serious problems that Don Bosco had to face in the years 1880-1881: the French anti-Congregation laws which put four Salesian houses in the country at risk; and the final break, after years of tension between the archbishop of Turin and the Salesians. The reconstruction is based on the critical edition of the 1880-1881 letters recently published (2016).

Don Bosco and the Oratory. By the editors of the manuscripts of the first regulations of the Oratory at Valdocco by Bruno Bordignon. The first Regulations of the Oratory of Valdocco were written entirely by Don Bosco in 1854. The two manuscripts of the regulations document his vision of the Oratory. Before writing the Historical Note on the Oratory, he comments on a text from John and illustrates the Oratory as a development and continuation of the mission of Jesus.

 Kindergarten. Salesian schools by Vito Maurizio. The kindergarten of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, a female Salesian school, is presented in the methods and content of teaching. It is limited to Italy, from the origins (1876 - Lu Monferrato) until 1914, when the Italian Government imposed its own programmes in these schools. State schools for infants were established only in 1968.

The "Sources" section includes the text:

The Preventive System in “Pedagogy Notes" by Giulio Barberis. an Anthology of texts and Critical Edition by José Manuel Prellezo. This is an anthology of the texts of Fr Giulio Barberis, Notes on Sacred Pedagogy or Notes on Salesian Pedagogy.  Variants suggested by Barberis in 1903 are taken into consideration in order to express better the content of the text that was placed in the hands of young Salesian novices.

In a Note entitled Promoting the Culture of Memory. The genesis and the relevance of the Italian Section of the Association of Salesian Historians (ACSSA), Rodolfo Bogotto writes about the origin and awareness of research methodology.

The issue concludes with reviews of some publications on Salesian personalities and activities.
