Zambia - Caring for the healthy vocational growth of young Salesians

24 January 2025

Lusaka, Zambia – January 2025 - From 20 to 23 January, the three Superiors of the Central Africa Province (AFC), the Southern Africa Vice-Province (AFM) and the Zambia-Malawi-Zimbabwe-Namibia Vice-Province (ZMB) together with the formation teams from the Kabwe novitiate (Saint Artemides Zatti, rector - novice director: Fr Tresford Chisanga) and the Lusaka-Makeni postnovitiate (Sacred Heart of Jesus, ector: Fr Leszek Aksamit) gathered for the Curatorium. From the honest and deep sharing during the two meetings, multiple signs of a growing quality of formation were detected: a united and dynamic intercultural formation team, careful accompaniment by the Superior of the ZMB Vice-Province Fr Michael Mbandama and the Formation Commission, self-sustainability, significantly improved libraries in both houses, continuous formation of formators and preparation of future teachers and formators, closer personal spiritual accompaniment. The structures of the Kabwe novitiate were expanded thanks to the record number of 28 novices (2024-2025) and the Lusaka postnovitiate with 39 postnovices with a new residential wing, a renovated chapel and the imminent construction of the Don Bosco Higher Education Institute building. The interprovincial novitiate in Kabwe with 28 novices from 4 Provinces also shows the growth of vocations and interculturalism. At the end of the Curatorium, the 3 Superiors shared some recommendations for charismatic growth: special care for Salesian brothers; quality of formation, synodality in the dynamics of the community and also the continuous construction of the necessary infrastructures and the improvement of the pastoral experience for all novices and postnovices.
