Missionaries and pastoral workers killed in 2024

‘We can ask: how did you endure so much tribulation?’. Fides Agency chose the words spoken by Pope Francis in Tirana Cathedral during his 2014 Apostolic Journey to Albania to introduce the customary annual report on missionaries and pastoral workers killed around the world in 2024.

The numbers

In 2024, according to data verified by Fides Agency, 13 Catholic missionaries were killed around the world, including eight priests and five lay people.

In detail, a total of 6 were killed in Africa (2 in Burkina Faso, 1 in Cameroon, 1 in the Democratic Republic of Congo and 2 in South Africa), 5 in the Americas (1 in Colombia, 1 in Ecuador, 1 in Mexico and 1 in Brazil) and 2 in Europe (1 in Poland and 1 in Spain).

From 2000 to 2024 the total number of missionaries and pastoral workers killed is 608.
