The "Generala"

The “Generala” was a prison for minors in Turin, which at Don Bosco's time had about 200 boys inside, aged between 12 and 18.

Between 1845 and 1855, Don Bosco visited it regularly.

In Lent of 1855 Don Bosco gave these young men a thorough catechism course, then even three days of Retreat, and was so impressed with their good will that he decided to organise a nice walk to Stupinigi for the boys.

Having obtained permission, he took 212 of them to Stupinigi, letting them spend a day of freedom before returning to the Generala.

Today the “Generala” is a juvenile correctional institution called the “Ferrante Aporti Juvenile Penal Institute.”
