Breña, Peru – January 2024 – In Salesian education, the value of the playing field is fundamental for the formation of children and young people. The Salesian Oratory in Breña has opened its doors to children and young people to participate in the 2024 edition of "Sol Bosco", which includes various recreational disciplines, such as self-defense, football, volleyball, basketball, crafts, Peruvian dances, music and modern dance. "Sol Bosco" offers an environment of integration and healthy fun for children, adolescents and young people. This space not only aims to encourage the development of skills and abilities in various disciplines, but, as in the time of Don Bosco, includes moments of prayer and accompaniment.
Alcabideche, Portugal – January 2024 – On 22 January Salesian Fr Juan Freitas was honoured by the Alcabideche Parish Council with a Medal of Merit for his special services to the parish. As motivation for the awarding of the medal, the commitment of Fr Freitas in the preparation of World Youth Day Lisbon 2023 was highlighted, as well as all the work he has developed in the social area of the parish and in the redevelopment of the celebratory spaces in the different parish communities; in addition to recognising the value of the pastoral service carried out by Fr Freitas in the three years he was parish priest of Alcabideche. The award was presented by the President of the City Council of Cascais, Carlos Carreiras, as part of the Solemn Session celebrating the 183rd anniversary of the parish of Alcabideche.
Gatchina, Russia – January 2024 – This year the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity was celebrated by the Salesian Catholic parish of Gatchina, with other religious confessions, for two days. On 20 January, the "second interfaith festival of religious hymns and organ music" was held in the Lutheran church of St Nicholas in Gatchina. The charity festival was jointly celebrated by Catholics, Lutherans and Orthodox in Gatchina and brought together about 80 listeners. Proceeds were divided equally for three social projects: Salesian Oratory, Orthodox Charitable Foundation for the Poor, Caring for the Elderly Parishioners of the Evangelical Lutheran Parish. The following day, 21 January, the traditional annual meeting, dedicated to the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, brought together representatives of the Catholic, Orthodox, Lutheran and Pentecostal religions.
This year the meeting took place in the Catholic parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and brought together about 30 Christians.
Tlanepantla, Mexico – January 2024 – On the occasion of the Salesian Family Spirituality Days celebrated in Turin, with live broadcasts around the world, the Salesian Family in Southern Mexico, in order to be able to follow them, organised a meeting in person at the Ángela Segovia de Serrano Salesian college and virtually through Zoom and Facebook. The event was convened by Fr Juan Aarón Cerezo Huerta, SDB, and Sister Adriana Dávila Ortega FMA, both Delegates for the Salesian Family in Southern Mexico. During the days, the participants reflected on the theme of the Rector Major's Strenna 2024, together with Fr Joan Lluís Playà, Central Delegate of the Rector Major for the Secretariat for the Salesian Family; an ecological living Rosary was recited; they reflected on the theme "The beauty of the Salesian Family" with the videos of Sister Lucrecia Uribe. On 21 January, a virtual meeting was held with the Rector Major, who shared the theme of Strenna 2024, providing a space for questions and answers. The conclusions of the Conference were presented by Sister Adriana Dávila Ortega FMA, closing the work with the Eucharistic celebration presided over by Fr. Ignacio Ocampo and concelebrated by all the priests present. The groups involved were SDB, FMA, ASC, ADMA, VDB and CDB, a total of 90 participants in person and 75 virtually connected.
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – January 2024 – An Inter-Congregational Job Fair 2024 was held on 24 January at the Don Bosco Catholic TVET Institute – Bosco Children, , a unique event aimed at providing job opportunities to graduates of Vocational Training Centres (VTC) of Salesian technical schools. The main goal of the event is to create job opportunities for graduates and to network CFP training providers with companies and agencies that promote self-employment and small businesses. Round tables were also held with various companies, government sector offices and training providers. The entire event was funded by the GSF (Global Solidarity Fund) through the Catholic Secretariat of the Archdiocese of Addis Ababa.
Zagreb, Croatia – January 2024 - The Salesians of the St John Bosco Province of Zagreb-Croatia (CRO) celebrated Province Day on the feast of St Francis de Sales (24 January). About sixty Salesians from the various communities from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Germany gathered for the occasion. The event began with Terce, which was followed by the greeting of the Provincial, Fr Tihomir Šutalo, and the presentation of the program. Fr Tomislav Lukač presented the Rector Major's Strenna 2024, published these days in Croatian, indicating the main points. Fr Pejo Orkić briefly presented the Croatian edition of the document "The parish and the shrine entrusted to the Salesians". Fr Mladen Delić, CRO Vice-Provincial, recalled two Salesians who will celebrate their 50th priestly ordination this year and the renewed web page of the CRO Province was presented: www.donbosco.hr Fr Šutalo then highlighted the most significant points of the province's life in 2023 and the most important ones to come in 2024. During the Eucharistic celebration twelve aspirants entered the Salesian prenovitiate. In his brief homily, Fr Šutalo encouraged these young people, as well as all the Salesians present, to be true shepherds in the modern world, following the example of the Good Shepherd Jesus Christ and to have a good and gentle heart following the example of Saint Francis de Sales.
