At the Senate of the Polish Republic there was a conference "At the service of God and the Fatherland" dedicated to Cardinal Hlond and organized by the parliamentary group of historical aficionados, from the "Society of Christ for Polish emigrants", founded by the same cardinal Hlond, and from the Salesian Province of Piła (PLN).
After the opening of the work sessions by Senator John Zaryn, Fr Pierluigi Cameroni, Postulator General, recalled the social and ecclesial value of the testimony of the new Venerable. Then Fr. Jarosław Wąsowicz, SDB, Director of the Salesian Historical Archives of Piła, and Fr Bogusław Koziol, Vice-postulator, coordinated the eight interventions that described different aspects of the cardinal's figure, highlighting the political, social and cultural role of his Magisterium and pastoral actions.
During his episcopal ministry he had to face and deal with the Nazi and communist regimes and he strongly criticized social injustices. He established the Social Council at the Primate of Poland and the "Society of Christ for Polish emigrants". In 1939, at the outbreak of the war, he went into exile in Rome, taking on the role of defender of Polish interests. Forced to leave Rome, he went to France, where he was arrested and interned. Released on July 12, 1945, he returned to Poland.
Presented at the end of the conference was the album "Hlond 1881-1948", published by the Institute of National Remembrance, and the postage stamp issued by the Polish Post Office for the anniversary.
In the evening, in the cathedral of Warsaw, a Eucharist was celebrated presided by the archbishop card. Kazimierz Nycz, and tribute paid to Card. Hlond near the chapel that holds his remains.
On October 22, 1948, on his deathbed, Card. Hlodn said: "I have worked for Christ and for Poland and I will do it again ... I made many sacrifices for Jesus and I sought His glory; I leave with joy ... Fight under the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The victory, when it comes, will be the victory of the Most Holy Mother."
A spokesperson for the Polish Episcopate pointed out that October 22 is an important date for Poland, for the anniversary of the death of card. Hlond and for that of the election of Pope John Paul II: "We know how these people have influenced the history of our nation, Europe and the world."
