The province's boundaries align with the external borders of the dioceses of Chełmno, Gdańsk, Gorzów, Koszalin-Kołobrzeg, Szczecin-Kamień, and Włocławek. At its inception, it comprised 57 Salesian presences forming 15 canonically established religious communities.
Upon its founding, the new province—also known as the "Northern Poland Province" (hence its acronym PLN)—had 235 perpetually or temporarily professed confreres and 15 novices. As of January 24, 2025, the PLN Province has 252 Salesians, including:
– 236 priests
– 1 deacon
– 7 coadjutors
This totals 246 perpetually professed members and 6 temporarily professed, along with 2 novices.
Since 2020, Fr. Tadeusz Itrych has been the Provincial Superior, succeeding Fr. Roman Jachimowicz (2016–2020). Fr. Jachimowicz was later elected as the Regional Councillor for Central and Northern Europe during the 28th General Chapter.
Over its 45 years of existence, the province has expanded its presence both within Poland and internationally. It has taken over houses in Poznań (for young people) and Łomianki (for students and professors), as well as missions abroad. The Salesians of Saint Adalbert's Province also oversee the Polish Catholic Mission in Stockholm and two parishes within the Stockholm Diocese.
Additionally, in 2012, the province incorporated Salesians and works from European Russia and Georgia. PLN Salesians are also active in the German Province, serving in parishes in the Diocese of Regensburg and in the Italian Catholic Mission of Mainz. Many PLN Salesians have embarked on missionary work, particularly in Africa and South America.
Current Scope of the PLN Province
The PLN Province currently consists of 32 canonically established religious communities and administers 39 parishes across four countries. Among these, it oversees three shrines:
– The Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation in Kawnice
– The Shrine of Mary Help of Christians in Rumia
– The Shrine of Blessed Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński in Kobylanka
Formation and Education
The province is heavily involved in formation and education. It manages:
– An interprovincial pre-novitiate for candidates from Poland's four Salesian provinces
– Four Retreat and Formation Centers in Ląd, Lubrza, Swobnica, and Oktiabrskiy (Russia)
At a broader level, the PLN Province oversees:
– 29 Oratories-Youth Centers
– 5 secondary schools
– 11 primary schools
– 2 kindergartens
– 4 vocational schools
– 5 centers for child care and education
– 2 youth education centers
– 3 boarding schools
– 7 chaplaincies
Overall, the PLN Province provides pastoral care to approximately 100,000 faithful and educates over 7,000 students through its institutions.
Academic Involvement
Many PLN Salesians are engaged in academic research and teaching, both in Poland and internationally. The majority work at the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University (UKSW) in Warsaw, where Fr. Ryszard Sadowski currently serves as Vice-Rector. Since 2011, the Piła Province has also been responsible for the university’s pastoral care.
Around the Salesian academic community, the "Francis de Sales" Scientific Society has emerged, publishing the scholarly journal Seminare. Additionally, several PLN Salesians teach at the Salesian Theological Institute in Krakow, while another Salesian is involved in formation at the Colle Don Bosco novitiate.
Salesian Family and Youth Ministry
Various branches of the Salesian Family are active within the province, with the largest group being the Salesian Cooperators. Other groups include the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, the Don Bosco Volunteers, the Past Pupils of Don Bosco, the Association of Mary Help of Christians, and the Congregations of St. Michael the Archangel (both male and female branches). These groups regularly organize meetings for planning, spiritual reflection, fraternity, and apostolic work.
Beyond schools and youth centers, youth ministry is vibrant across various communities and groups. Among the most prominent are:
– The Altar Service (altar boys)
– The Light-Life Movement
– Music and choir groups
– The Salesian Sports Organization "SALOS RP"
Some youth evangelization programs have weakened in recent years, such as the Salesian Evangelization Pilgrimage, the "City of the Desert" Movement, and the Scouting Movement (Republican Scouts Union, European Scouts). Efforts are underway to revitalize the media and missionary sectors.
New Evangelization Initiatives
The Piła Salesians have recently launched a men's formation movement called "Knights of Mary", which has gained popularity in Poland and beyond, particularly within Polish Catholic Missions. Today, the movement has around 3,000 officially enrolled members worldwide, with an additional 10,000 in preparation. About 200 priests, including bishops, are actively involved.
One of the province’s most original evangelization initiatives is the National Pilgrimage of Soccer Fans to Jasna Góra, organized annually by the Salesians of Piła. This event has attracted thousands of participants, with the highest attendance reaching 7,000 people before the pandemic.
