RMG – SDB Provinces: the “Mary Help Of Christians” Province of Australia-Pacific (AUL)

10 March 2025

(ANS – Rome) – In 2023, Salesians celebrated 100 years of presence in Australia.  It began in 1923 in Western Australia, then moved to the Eastern States of Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and New South Wales.

The Australia-Pacific Province (AUL), canonically erected in 1958, comprehends Australia, Fiji Islands, New Zealand and Samoa. The Pacific Delegation – Fiji Islands, New Zealand and Samoa – was canonically erected in 2017.

Personnel and Ministries

–     There are currently 81 Salesians living and working in the Province.  There are 65 Salesians – 10 students in initial formation, the rest are in either part-time or active full-time ministries in schools, parishes, youth centres and hostel and migrant chaplaincy.

–     There are 15 Salesian communities across Australia (11) and Pacific (4) entrusted with ministries to four (4) Salesian owned schools; two (2) Salesian built schools and three (3) schools under Salesian charism. All these schools are effectively run and managed by lay professional staff with school Leadership and governing Board.  Governance by Incorporated Body/Company.

–     There are two (2) Youth Centres in two States running active and regular recreational programs to the local young people including from schools in the surrounding areas. There is a Youth Hostel which provide suitable but affordable accommodation meals services to young people ‘living and working’ away from home from both interstate and international backgrounds.

–     Annual formation and training for young leaders, from our schools and parishes, for yearly winter and summer camps for children and young people.

–     Annual Salesian Immersion for new school staff (teachers and other school members) including Immersion/Retreat for volunteers in preparation for international Cagliero Projects in Samoa, Cambodia and Timor Leste.

Members of the Salesian Family present in the Province:

–     Daughters of Mary Help of Christians: 8 FMA communities in Australia and in the Pacific;

–     Salesian Cooperators;

–     Salesian Past Pupils’ Association;

–     CSJ – Caritas Sisters of Jesus.

Priorities and Proposed Lines of Action

–     More fidelity to Don Bosco by more communion among confreres;

–     Our mission is to be more strongly evangelising and intensely Salesian;

–     A more robust Vocational Accompaniment;

–     A greater commitment to forming Lay Leadership in the Salesian charism and mission.

And especially for for the Pacific Delegation

–     More fidelity to Don Bosco means that the Pacific confreres are to make more efforts to inculturate the Salesian charism in the Pacific cultures in such a way that the local culture becomes more in accord with the Gospel values and any habits that are not proper to Salesian consecrated life are to be tackled and overcome.

–     Love for ‘Work and Temperance’ should be explicitly practised as a strong and distinct Salesian quality among confreres.  Help one another to grow in this aspect of religious life.

–     Need to reflect, assess and verify the vocational fragility.

–     Internationality emerged as an important factor in the process of inculturation of the Salesian charism.

–     The Delegation has to have a clear plan of Salesian formation for lay people including the young.
