United States – First Salesian Missionary Meeting in the Western United States Province

09 September 2024

(ANS – Los Angeles) – Under the leadership of Fr. Mel Trinidad and the Delegate of Mission Animation, six Salesian missionaries from different parts of the world gathered at St. Dominic Savio Church to discuss the experiences and challenges faced by missionaries joining the Salesian province of San Francisco. This meeting was a rich exchange of personal stories, highlighting the need for a more structured, welcoming, and supportive approach for those arriving to serve in the province.

The gathering focused on how the province can create a more welcoming, structured, and supportive environment for Salesian missionaries, especially as they adapt to a new culture and responsibilities. One recurring theme was the initial sense of isolation felt by many missionaries. Some of our missionaries shared their personal struggles with feeling disconnected from youth culture and the complexities of navigating essential tasks, such as acquiring necessary documents like a driver's license. Others recalled their arrival when they felt abandoned and lonely due to the lack of preparation in the province for receiving international Salesians. These stories highlighted the emotional and logistical challenges missionaries face as they adjust to life in a new country.

To address these pressing challenges, we are taking concrete steps to improve the experience for new missionaries. The Mission Animation Delegate proposed the creation of a comprehensive Welcome Manual, which will include a detailed checklist to help newcomers navigate essential tasks such as acquiring documentation, understanding their responsibilities, and finding their role within the province. This manual will provide clarity and support in the critical first months, ensuring that missionaries feel grounded in their mission from day one.

Missionary accompaniment will also be enhanced through regular community gatherings. These gatherings are not just social events but opportunities to deepen the bonds of fraternity, ensuring that missionaries are fully integrated into the Salesian family and mission. They will offer a formal opportunity to introduce new missionaries and make them feel more connected to the broader Salesian family.

During the meeting, we also reflected on the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4). As part of this reflection, the missionaries created a well using clay, symbolizing the deep, life-giving encounters that we are called to facilitate in our mission work. This creative exercise emphasized the importance of nourishing the spiritual and emotional needs of both the missionaries and the communities they serve.

The Salesian charism calls us to create a family-like environment where everyone feels at home. Through these new initiatives—offering practical guidance, emotional support, and community integration—we are strengthening our ability to welcome and accompany every missionary. Together, we are building an environment where all who serve feel fully at home, empowered to carry out their mission with joy and purpose. Let us continue to work hand in hand, ensuring that each missionary who arrives in our province feels the embrace of the Salesian family from the very start.

Another meeting will take place in San Francisco to meet with other missionaries living in the northern part of the province.
