India – YaR Leaders: Agents of Change and Transforming Lives

(ANS – New Delhi) - The three-day YaR Leaders’ Orientation 2024 took place from 29th to 31st July, at the Provincial House, New Delhi. Participants from 10 provinces of India and National office staff, totaling to 38 and 7 resource persons attended the programme.

YaR Orientation began with the lighting of the lamp by dignitaries. Fr. Joe Prabu, Executive Director of Don Bosco National Forum for the Young at Risk, welcomed all with an introductory note and invited chief guest Fr. John Parankimalil, the SPCSA Secretary, to address the gathering.

Discussions were centered on YaR leaders’ being agents of change and transforming lives through positive existence. It emphasized holistic youth development, leadership, and inspiration. Presentations covered a variety of topics, including the YaR mission, challenges faced by migrants, and the importance of data security and privacy. Various provinces outlined their annual plans, focusing on priorities of reaching out to migrants, substance abusers or addicts, 18 plus with aftercare, etc.

Rights-based approach was a key focus, with emphasis on providing basic facilities, ensuring birth registration, and advocating for universal education. Presenters highlighted the importance of the Child Safeguarding Policy, including zero tolerance for violence and involving children in decision-making processes. The necessity of family-based care over institutionalization was underscored, recognizing the potential benefits of CCIs but stressing that children often prefer returning to their families.

The role of civil society organizations in child protection was discussed, including challenges posed in the FCRA and Digital Data Protection Act, 2023. Modern fundraising strategies, such as leveraging CRM software and AI for targeted campaigns, were deemed essential for effective resource mobilization. The importance of community empowerment, technology, and rational thinking in protecting children were highlighted, alongside the need for standardized data collection and regular audits to improve service delivery and accountability.

The YaR Leaders’ Orientation was concluded in the presence of Fr. Davis Maniparamben, the Provincial of New Delhi Province. He expressed words of wisdom and released the YaR and Homelink Annual Report 2023-24 and distributed certificates to participants. Br. Bosco Ekka expressed vote of thanks as a closure to YaR orientation programme.
