Italy – The Salesian North-East Italy Province relies on "Gemini AI" to revolutionise teaching in all its locations

(ANS – Venice) – The school sector also recognises the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI). In the last year and a half, with the spread of generative AI in different areas, from work to everyday life, the debate on the use of this technology and possible developments has intensified more and more, also involving the education sector. Although it is an ever-changing technology, the potential benefits to support teachers and students are manifold. For this reason, for the new school year, the Salesian St Mark Province of North-East Italy (INE), supported by "MR Digital", an Italian integration and technological consulting company, has decided to adopt "Gemini AI", the innovative AI integrated into "Google Workspace for Education" throughout its network of schools.

The project promises to revolutionise the way we teach and learn and offers a wide range of tools to support teachers at all stages of the educational process.

The INE Province involves Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Trentino Alto Adige, with a network of schools ranging from primary to university and involving more than 9,000 students and 950 teachers every day. And it is precisely to support the latter and allow them to guarantee their students increasingly personalised and interactive lessons that they have chosen to buy 800 licenses which will allow the integration of Artificial Intelligence in all the schools of the network.

The integration of "Gemini AI" in Google for Education, made available in Italy at the end of May, allows to enhance teaching for teachers, allowing them, for example, to: create engaging content, thanks to the ability to automatically generate presentations, lesson cards and other interactive materials; offer students individual and timely feedback on their tasks and projects; automate repetitive tasks, such as proofreading or creating quizzes, to devote more time to teaching; adapt teaching to the needs of each student, thanks to personalised data and insights. Gemini AI Education is also constantly evolving and new features will be released during the school year.

Confidentiality has absolute priority in the use of "Gemini Chat" with the school account "Workspace". The data is never reviewed by third parties, is not used for the training of artificial intelligence models and is never shared with other users or institutions.

As part of the agreement, "Google for Education" will also undertake to guarantee teachers, through courses provided by MR Digital, the necessary training to be able to make the most of AI in the classroom.

"Don Bosco, who inspires us with his charism, has always pushed us to be ‘at the forefront of progress’ for the good of young people and their future. We want to embrace this challenge and support educators in their task of guiding our children, teenagers and young people towards new horizons", commented Alberto Grillai, Delegate of the Salesian Foundation for Vocational Training in North East Italy.

"We are not afraid to continue learning and create stimulating paths for our teachers, educators and trainers, because we feel the urgency to educate and dare" Fr Lorenzo Teston, Provincial Delegate for INE Schools, echoed him. "Technology is a tool, and AI is particularly so. We want to study it, explore it and understand it to help young people build a different world. The investment of resources we are making is significant, but we are convinced of the importance of this project."

Marco Berardinelli, head of "Education Google Italy" said: "We are very happy to support MR Digital and the INE Province in the adoption of our most advanced technologies for education. The INE Province represents a centre of excellence that today thanks to Google Workspace for Education Plus and the Gemini AI Education generative AI platform is able to set itself as a reference in the revolution that the school system is facing."

"In our daily work with schools we see, along with some fears, how it is natural that it is with a new technology and with such disruptive potential, also a great enthusiasm, curiosity and desire to experiment", Andrea Russo, CEO of MR Digital, said finally.

He also added: "We have been supporting the INE Province for several years in its path of introducing new technologies in the educational field and we are very happy that it has decided to take up the challenge of AI now, representing, to date, the widest adoption of this technology offered by Google for Education in a network of schools. We can't wait to find out how teachers will use the new features to improve teaching.”
