Sri Lanka - Visit of the Rector Major

(ANS - Bandaranayake) - On 10 November at 9.30 a.m. the Rector Major, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, arrived in Sri Lanka at the Bandaranayake International Airport where he was welcomed by the Superior of the Vice-Province, Fr. Joseph Almeida, along with other Salesians and representatives of the Salesian Family.

The visit of the Rector Major to Sri Lanka will begin officially on 11 November with a Eucharistic celebration and a meeting with the Provincial council. In the afternoon he will meet with groups of young people and he will conclude the day by meeting the Salesians.

On Saturday he is scheduled to visit the houses of formation and some groups of the Salesian Family, followed by a meeting with the FMA and with young people. On Sunday morning the Rector Major will leave for the Province of Tiruchy.

The Salesian presence in Sri Lanka began in 1956 with the first Don Bosco Centre founded in Negombo. The Salesians of Don Bosco now have 18 centres in different parts of the country. The Don Bosco Salesian community works mainly in education and support of young people. There are 89 Salesians: 8 novices, 43 Salesian priests, 3 Salesian brothers and 35 students in formation.
