Democratic Republic of Congo – Arrival of Cardinal Ángel Fernández Artime in Lubumbashi

13 May 2024

(ANS – Lubumbashi) – Cardinal Ángel Fernández Artime, 10th Successor of Don Bosco and Rector Major of the Salesians of Don Bosco, landed at Luano-Lubumbashi airport on Saturday 11 May 2024, at 15:10 (UTC+2), from Goma. Since his arrival he has been warmly received by numerous members of the Salesian Family.

Accompanying him on the trip inside the country were Fr Guillermo Basanes, Superior of the Central African Province (AFC), Fr Gauthier Tshibangu, Superior of the Eastern Delegation of AFC, and the rectors of all the communities in that Delegation.

When the plane carrying him landed at Lubumbashi International Airport, Bishops Gaston Ruvezi, SDB, and Abeli Muhoya, bishops of the dioceses of Sakania Kipushi and Kindu respectively, were also on the runway to offer the Salesian cardinal his first words of welcome to the city.

Subsequently, the Rector Major had a short time of rest and exchange with various Church and State authorities, who also came for the occasion of his visit, while a larger group was preparing to greet him and welcome him immediately outside: among them Fr Tryphon Kalimira, Vice-Provincial of the AFC Province, Sister Clarisse Ngoy, Superior of the Province of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (FMA), several Salesian Provincial Councillors and the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, Rectors of the local communities, a good representation of the members of the Salesian Family, young students from Salesian schools and from the Don Bosco University of Lubumbashi (UDBL), not to mention various supporters and sympathisers of Salesian work.

The Cardinal had time to greet all those present at the airport, from near and far, before getting into his vehicle and following the procession that accompanied him to the Provincial House, where again a festive moment of tributes and compliments for his presence in the city was staged.

Excited by the affection shown to him by so many parties, the Rector Major thanked everyone for the warm welcome and offered a brief prayer of blessing. In the evening, in the courtyard  the Rector Major shared a moment of fraternal agape with some members of the Salesian Family who had been invited to the evening of joy, which was also attended by Bishop. Nestor Ngoy Kathawa, bishop emeritus of the Diocese of Kolwezi.

It is worth remembering that Card. Á.F. Artime arrived in Lubumbashi after having previously been at the refugee camp in Palabek, Uganda, and in Goma, in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo, devastated by an unjust war. In this second stage, in addition to presiding over a series of events and celebrations, he also visited the people displaced by the war, in particular those living in the tents around Don Bosco Ngangi.
