Spain – 'Don Bosco Tech Europe' at the National Congress promoted by the Spanish Episcopal Conference

27 February 2024

(ANS - Madrid) - Piero Fabris, the Executive Director of Don Bosco Tech Europe, had the honour of representing the Salesian Congregation as a keynote speaker at the Spanish National Congress "La Iglesia en la Educacion", promoted by the Spanish Episcopal Conference On 24 February 2024, at the Madrid Trade Fair Institute (IFEMA).

The speech, aimed at giving an overview of vocational training trends in Europe and the Mediterranean basin and highlighting what appear to be the major challenges for the near future, can be summarized in three points:

- How to make Vocational Training Centres more streamlined in their processes to increase the overall speed of reaction/iteration with the labour market, as well as the importance of European projects to increase the internal know-how of trainers and centres through cooperation between Vacational Technical Education providers and companies.

- How to be able to support and sustain, as experimenters in the field, European policies that aim at providing international reference frameworks and tools to manage formal and informal skills recognition processes in a standardized way. This is a fundamental point, in view of the job placements arising from migration flows and the increasing professional mobility of young graduates.

- How to do all this and more, without losing sight of the human dimension of education and training…  How to continue to be for young people 'a home that welcomes' and which, in addition to providing high quality technical and professional skills, is always the place where people's hearts are cared for. This is another great challenge, in the light of an increasingly fast-paced and in some ways violent and complex world towards the most fragile.

In this sense, Dr Fabris emphasized the need to always maintain Don Bosco's mission and Salesian charism as the central element of all educational work. Quoting the conclusions of the Bishop of Bilbao, Rt. Rev. Joseba Segura: "Education and training are constantly evolving. I am sure that the mechanics of five years ago were different to what we teach today and will be different to what we will teach in 2040. But there is a common and timeless trait. Certainly in 1900s, today and in 2100s there will be men and women who, behind their skills, will be able to decide to be honest citizens or not. What the trainers of yesterday, today and tomorrow have in common is the educational mission to set values and examples, so that our young people in whatever professional context they work in, are first and foremost: honest people, fair to others, be persons of value and with a passion for their work”.

Special thanks were expressed by the staff of Don Bosco Tech Europe to 'Tech Don Bosco', the reference point in Madrid for the entire European Salesian network, and to the Province of Spain - San Giacomo Maggiore (SSM) for the support and fraternity shown.
