RMG – The Salesian Congregation takes part in Laudato Si’ week

30 May 2023

(ANS – Rome) – During Laudato Si 'Week, launched by Pope Francis from 21 to 28 May 2023, several events were held at the local level to celebrate creation and spread the message of Laudato Si’ on listening to the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor. The Salesian Congregation also played an active part.

In particular, we would like to point out that the presentation of the brochure Our Common Home, jointly produced by the Stockholm Environmental Institute (www.sei.org) and the Vatican, was held in Rome. The presentation was organised by the Holy See’s Dicastery for the Service of Integral Human Development at the Swedish Institute of Classical Studies. Speaking at the event were Cardinal Michael Czerny, S.J., Prefect of the Dicastery, the Director of the Institute, Måns Nilsson, the Ambassador of Sweden to the Holy See, Hon. Andrés Jato, the Executive Director of the Laudato Si’ Movement, Tomás Insua, VIS and Salesians of Don Bosco represented by Emanuela Chiang, and Caritas Internationalis.

The booklet which was presented combines science and faith in a very simple and suitable way for any reader, to communicate how important it is both from a scientific point of view and from the point of view of faith to recognise the interconnections and – beginning with the scientific data – to draw on faith for adopting an attitude of real care towards creation.

The text is available in several languages (Italian, English, French, Spanish and Portuguese) at https://www.sei.org/publications/ourcommonhome/

“We invite everyone to download and use this valuable tool,” commented Dr. Chiang, the Youth Ministry Sector Contact for Integral Ecology.

The Day of Reflection on Laudato Si’ was held in Brussels on 26 May. It was organised by the European Laudato Si’ Alliance (ELSIA), which the Salesians are members of through Don Bosco International (DBI). This year’s theme was “What kind of Skills for Ecological Conversion?”

2023 is the European Year of Skills. Addressing the challenges posed by climate change and rising social inequalities requires a range of skills, not just techniques. We need vision, “knowing how to think outside the box”, willingness to listen, empathy, narration and determination to put them all at the service of the radical change that Pope Francis has called to trigger throughout his entire magisterium. Emanuela Chiang took part, representing the Youth Ministry Sector.
