Spain - Incubators for Ukrainian newborns reach Kyiv and Mykolaiv

21 July 2022

(ANS - Madrid) - In June, 10 incubators made by students and teachers from Salesian Vocational Training Centers in Spain were delivered to the "Clúster SOS Ucrania" platform in Navarre, to be donated to Ukrainian hospitals. Currently, as of July, four of these special cribs have already been deployed in hospitals in Kyiv and Mykolaiv, while the others will arrive later this month. Ukrainian doctors are already using these devices, and they especially appreciate the possibility of using the phototherapy technique.

Students from eight Salesian VTCs in Spain were commissioned to build these incubators, designed by the NGO "Medicina Abierta al Mundo." "It was a pleasure for us to work on the construction of these incubators for premature babies. We learn to work with new materials, plus we feel useful," the young students said when they delivered the cribs.

Hospitals in Kyiv and Mykolaiv were the first to receive them, and in the coming days, the humanitarian convoy "Clúster SOS Ucrania" will see to it that other incubators arrive at hospitals in Zaporizhia and Lykolaiv. Meanwhile, an additional 50 units have already been requested from Ukraine. This project was made possible thanks to the solidarity of several entities, including the "Mulier" sports club, Pharmacists without Borders, and "IMQ" of Asturias.

Pablo Sánchez, the young engineer who participated in the design of the incubators, pointed out that now the requests for these devices are considerable and are coming from different places around the world. That is why they will continue to be built during the next academic year. From the NGO "Medicina Abierta al Mundo," which created the idea, designed the prototype, and built the first incubators, they say, "The Salesian centers have become the strength of the project."

Many companies, in their own small way, are interested in contributing to the project, donating materials, or producing small parts that will be used to build the cradles. This is the case of the valuable collaboration with the company "M Torres," which provides small parts to complete the devices making use of 3D printing, or the company "Moshy," which instead has provided the linings for the mats that are placed inside the incubator. The project also enjoys the support of the banking company "La Caixa," through the "FPDualiza" initiative.

Before the start of the war in Ukraine, other countries, especially in Africa and America, had already benefited from the project, receiving these apparatuses for premature infants.
