Malta – Moving Beyond Ourselves - SYM Samaritans of today

01 December 2021

(ANS – Sliema) - The Salesian Youth Movement (SYM) in Europe and the Middle East, led by the so-called "Small Team", held its traditional European General Assembly on the weekend of 26-28 November. After a year and a half without being able to carry out face-to-face activities, the young people, Salesians and Salesian Sisters of 13 different countries finally gathered in Malta, at the oratory "St. Patrick" of Sliema, managed and animated by the Salesians.

The main objective of the meeting was first to strengthen and review the foundations of the SYM, at the national, regional and European level, and secondly, to prepare the next "Assembly", which will take place from 11 to 16 August 2022. During the assembly the participants also chose the official logo of the 2022 Assembly and began to initiate the first steps in organizing the event.

In addition, the newly re-elected General Councilor for Youth Ministry of the Salesian Sisters, Sr Runita Borja FMA, accompanied the 50 participants throughout the weekend and reflected with them on the value of the SYM Assembly, on its history and on the chosen theme: "Moving Beyond Ourselves. SYM Samaritans today" (Andare oltre noi stessi. MGS samaritani di oggi).

Miguel Angel Garcia Morcuende, General Councilor for Salesian Youth Ministry, also had a fruitful dialogue with the young people gathered in Sliema, by video conference – having been held-up in Turin with the Salesian Provincials of Europe. In his online meeting with young people, he invited them to reflect on the future and on the priority objectives of the SYM for the coming years.

At the end of the meeting, it was also announced that the next European Assembly 2022 would take place in Zagreb, Croatia.

They were, ultimately, days of encounter, of testimonies, of prayer, of celebration, for a Salesian Youth Movement that is alive and must continue to be a reference for the youth of the world.
