Italy – The 13th Marathon - Corsa dei Santi – A Success

02 November 2021

(ANS - Rome) - Over 1,500 runners took part yesterday, on November 1st, the all-Saints Day, in the 13th Marathon Corsa dei Santi, offered in two versions: competitive and non-competitive race -both along a 10-kilometer road route. It was, as always, a celebration of sport and solidarity with the participants who, in the drizzle, ran by some of the most famous and beautiful streets and squares of the city of Rome and thus contributed to supporting the solidarity project of this year: “Let's give them back their childhood”, which aims to fight and prevent child exploitation in Colombia.

Each year, the Race for the Saints aims to give greater visibility to the charitable initiatives carried out by Salesians all over the world. This time the project coordinated by "Missioni Don Bosco", the Salesian Mission Office of Turin, and carried out on site by the Salesians of the "Ciudad Don Bosco" center in Medellín, was to support children and young people in the rural areas of the municipalities of Amagá and Angelópolis, who were forced to give up their childhood and spend whole days in the coal mines.

Thanks to the support that many benefactors have given the plan developed by the Sons of Don Bosco to prevent all forms of exploitation of these minors will be strengthened. Its a plan that provides for their reception at the "Ciudad Don Bosco" center, and the offer of food, education and vocational training, so as to guarantee them a present of serenity and a future of opportunity.

As for the race, in the women's field, there could not have been a more symbolic victory. Sara Carnicelli (35:39 minutes), flag-bearer of the "Athletica Vaticana" who was present with a large group of runners, arrived first at the finish line. “I am happy to have won this very important race in solidarity,” she told Corriere dello Sport, “and above all I am proud to have won it for my sports club. This is a race with a unique charm and running along the historic central city and thinking I can help those who suffer with my gesture has made it even more beautiful.”

In the male category, instead, success for another Italian, Stefano Ghenda, of the “Trevisatletica”, who in 32:25 minutes, was the first to cross the finish line in front of St. Peter's Square. “In a race like this” – in his words – “it's not about winning, it's about being there. I am happy to have contributed with my participation to help the solidarity project and this is worth more than a victory.”

During the broadcast of the race, live on the Italian national broadcaster Canale 5, various athletes and personalities intervened, such as the Olympic and Paralympic athletes Fiona May and Oxana Corso, the singer Moreno and the Salesian Fr Rafael Bejarano Rivera, SDB, who invited viewers to join in contributing to this even with their solidarity.
