He was not only an outstanding spiritual leader, but also a "head of state", a moral authority. In March 1946 he was appointed bishop of Lublin, and in his episcopal coat of arms he placed the words "Soli Deo", to the one God. After the death of August Hlond, a Salesian, in 1948 he was appointed archbishop of Gniezno and Warsaw and Primate of Poland. Created cardinal in January 1953, he paid for the defense of the Church with a prison sentence. Faced with the imposition of a regime that would have taken away his religious freedom, he did not remain silent, he wrote, he expressed his opposition to it and for this he was re-arrested and spent three years in prison, from 1953 to 1956. The "Primate of the Millennium" died on May 28, 1981, in Warsaw. His funeral became a national demonstration and representatives of the communist regime also attended.

The beatification process of Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski began as early as 1989. In October 2019, Pope Francis authorized the Congregation for the Causes of Saints to promulgate a decree on the miracle of healing a 19-year-old woman from thyroid cancer, at which the doctors had not given any chance of recovery. The beatification took place on 12 September 2021 in Warsaw.
