Ecuador - Street children celebrate International Children’s Day

03 June 2016

(ANS - Quito) - According to the Ecuadorian Institute of Statistics and Census, in Ecuador there are about 360 thousand children and adolescents aged 5 to 17 working on the street. Although child labour has decreased in recent years, it is known that behind this reality there are issues of domestic abuse and gangs that force children to sell, play instruments or juggle on buses and at street corners. To mark International Children’s Day the Foundation of the Salesian Project "Chicos de la Calle" celebrated with around 1,700 children.

On 1 June, the Foundation was present with a pavilion at Boulevard Plaza de la Av. 24 de Mayo, in Quito, where the young people put on an artistic festival. At the same time 30 children of the GOL A.S.O programme participated in a sports event organized by the Minister of Sports, Hon. Xavier Enderica.

In both events the emphasis was on the dignity of the children and adolescents on the street or in high-risk situations. They aimed at maximum participation of young people, encouraging them to go on stage and speak in public. "We wanted to ensure that the festival was not just a series of activities for the children and teenagers, but that they themselves were the actors and the protagonists of the festival".

The Foundation of the Salesian Project "Chicos de la Calle" has been working for 10 years to ensure that children and adolescents can complete their studies at school. It also supports young people in university education, as well as helping young people to find their place in the world of work. The project leaders say: "This challenge is still valid, since the aim is for young people to have access to a dignified life and for each of them to realize his or her dream.”
