Bahrain – October 2024 – In his second consecutive year of participation in the Gymnasiade, Salesian student and athlete from Aracaju, João Paulo Amaral, won the title of World School Karate Champion, in the 65kg category. The fight for gold took place against a karate chamption from China, who was beaten by the Salesian student. The "World School Gymnasiade 2024" was held in Bahrain, from 23 to 31 October. According to the organisers of the event, more than 6,000 student athletes from 71 countries participated, competing for medals in 26 sports. In 2023, João Paulo had ranked second in Karate, at the Gymnasiade held in Rio de Janeiro, and so now he has further improved an already valuable result.
Maynooth, Ireland – November 2024 - Saturday 9 November was the graduation ceremony for students who have completed their studies in Salesian Youth Ministry and Spirituality. This course is offered at St Patrick's Pontifical University in Maynooth, Ireland, in collaboration with the Salesian Youth Ministry Delegation of St Patrick's Province of Ireland (IRL). Diploma and Higher Diploma (HDip) certificates were given to eligible students, including lay, Salesian and religious students from other institutes, from different continents. The course takes place from September to July for full-time students, and includes summer camps for practice and a weekly practical experience in schools, parishes and projects for young people. The course can be a year, or two years for those who prefer to do it part-time.
Munich, Germany – November 2024 - The annual meeting of the Commission for the Formation of the Central and Northern Europe Region took place at the Salesianum in Munich from Monday 4 to Friday 8 November. The meeting was attended by the Provincial Delegates for Formation from 16 of the 17 Provinces of the Region, together with Fr Ivo Coelho, General Councillor for Formation, and Fr Guido Errico, from the Formation Sector. On Tuesday, Fr Coelho updated the participants on the progress made so far in the radical revision of the Ratio and its structure and the main topics covered. On Wednesday, the Delegates went by train to the Salesian presence in Benediktbeuern, where Katherina and Niklas Greguli, two lay members of the Salesian Family, led a workshop for the Delegates on "hopes and fears" in the context of "Spes non Confundit", the Jubilee 2025 proclamation. The Delegates also had the opportunity to converse with two young Salesians who were studying in Benediktbeuern and to celebrate Mass with the Salesian community and a group of students and lay collaborators. Thursday 7th was dedicated to talks by Fr Johannes Hass and Fr Norbert Schutzner on the theme: "Social Media, the Digital World and their impact on Education". All participants expressed their gratitude for the warm welcome received and for the mutual support among the Delegates.
Tura, India – October, 2024 – In a remarkable celebration of environmental awareness, Don Bosco College of Teacher Education and Don Bosco Degree College in Tura embraced the spirit of the Don Bosco Global Youth Film Festival (DBGYFF) 2024, hosting impactful screenings for students, faculty, and community members. From October 14 to 16, Don Bosco College of Teacher Education showcased a selection of inspiring short films to 100 engaged students and faculty members. Each film prompted reflection on environmental stewardship and sparked conversations on individual responsibility in protecting the planet. Principal Dr. Fr. Pius Varghese praised the screenings, emphasizing the importance of instilling environmental awareness in future educators. Following this, on October 18, Don Bosco Degree College welcomed 80 attendees to their DBGYFF screening. Vice Principal Fr. John Paul Tirkey opened the event, highlighting the festival’s mission to inspire meaningful environmental action. Through compelling films and discussions, participants explored how individual actions contribute to larger environmental preservation efforts. Together, these screenings underscored DBGYFF’s commitment to fostering environmental awareness, empowering the youth of Tura to champion the cause of sustainability.
