India - From tea gardens to rugby fields: the success of the Jungle Crows at the National Games
Siliguri, India - January 2025 - The West Bengal State women's rugby team, consisting of several players from villages in the Siliguri parish area, is successfully participating in the 38th National Games. The women's rugby team is based in Saraswatipur, a small tea plantation village in the Jalpaiguri district, under the Don Bosco Siliguri Shrine parish, founded in 1993. The team, called ‘Jungle Crows’, takes in many Adivasi tribal girls. It was founded in 2004 by a British bank employee, Paul Walsh, who was in Calcutta at the time. Currently, the girls are looked after by Salesian Fr Mathew George, who explained: ‘Jungle Crows is not just a team, but also a community development programme. The young people are not only coached, but receive education, food and life skills’. The National Games in which the team is engaged are India's mini-Olympics that will end on 14 February and include 36 different sports disciplines.
