Azerbaijan - The traveling statue of Our Lady of Fatima in South Caucasus

19 October 2022

Baku, Azerbaijan - October 2022 - On 15 October, the Apostolic Prefecture of the Catholic Church in Azerbaijan, entrusted since 2000 to the care of the Salesian Province of Slovakia (SLK), at the Cathedral of Mary Immaculate in Baku, capital of the Republic of Azerbaijan, under the leadership of the first Catholic bishop in Azerbaijan, Msgr. Vladimir Fekete SDB, received the traveling statue of Our Lady of Fatima with great joy. Throughout a week the statue of Our Lady of Fatima was received in two parishes of the Apostolic Prefecture and in the chapels of the three religious communities, involved in the mission in this predominantly Muslim country. On the last day, before the statue's transfer to Tbilisi, Georgia, numerous faithful participated in Baku Cathedral in a day of prayer for peace in Ukraine, the Transcaucasus region, and the world as a whole, and for the conversion of sinners. The Apostolic Nuncio in Tbilisi, Msgr. Jose Avelino Bettencourt, had prepared for the visit of the traveling statue in 2019, but the Covid-19 pandemic forced the plans to be revised. However, to the great joy of the few Catholic communities in Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Armenia, this initiative was able to take place in October 2022. On this occasion, the Catholic communities in the South Caucasus received a letter of greeting from Pope Francis, with a special blessing from the Holy Father. "We trust that the blessing implored in this post-pandemic period for us and for the whole world will help deepen the spiritual life of the Christian communities in the Caucasus," they say from the Apostolic Prefecture of Azerbaijan.
