RMG – The missionaries of the 155th Salesian Missionary Expedition: Donatien Martial Balezou, from the Equatorial Tropical Africa Province (ATE) to the Province of Belo Horizonte, Brazil (BBH)

(ANS – Rome) – In view of the 155th Salesian Missionary Expedition (29 September 2024), in collaboration with the Missions Sector ANS is pleased to present the 27 Salesians who will depart from the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians to place themselves at the service of young people around the world, as missionaries ad gentes, ad exterosad vitam. Let us begin today with Donatien and his Salesian joy in fulfilling God’s mission in everyday life: today he shares with readers of ANS his reflections on the missionary choice which will see him cross the ocean to go from the Central African Republic to Brazil.

Hi Donatien! Introduce yourself…

My name is Donatien Martial Balezou, I am a Salesian of Don Bosco, I come from Our Lady of Africa Vice-Province of Equatorial Tropical Africa (ATE) and I am originally from the Central African Republic, diocese of Bouar. I have been sent on mission to Brazil, specifically to Belo Horizonte.

What inspired you to choose to become a missionary?

For my choice to become a Salesian missionary I was inspired by different elements linked to my faith, vocation and the deep desire to place myself at the service of others, especially young people, following Don Bosco as my model. In short, I am driven by a deep Christian vocation, by love for young people and by the desire to live a life of service.

Are you happy with where you are going? Do you have any fears or concerns about the new place, culture and people?

Yes, I am happy with where I am going because I am sure that I am fulfilling my vocation, serving God and others, especially young people. My Salesian joy lies in the mission itself, that is, in fulfilling God’s mission in daily life, with the support of the community and prayer. It is perfectly normal for me, or for anyone embarking on a new mission or in a new context, to have fears and concerns, as well as aspirations. These fears and ambitions are part of my normal journey, and to overcome my fears I find strength and comfort in my faith and my vocation.

How did your family members, friends and confreres react when you told them about your missionary vocation?

Reactions to the news of my missionary vocation varied from person to person, depending on relationships, beliefs, and expectations. In general, despite some initial concerns, most friends and family supported my choice when they understood that this decision comes from a deep spiritual call and the desire to serve God and others.

What are your plans and dreams for your missionary life?

My aspirations are shaped by my vocation, so my plans and dreams are realised through daily actions, patient and persevering work, anchored in faith and love for others, especially for young people.

Do you have some great missionary role models in mind whose lifestyle you want to follow?

Certainly Blessed Stephen Sándor: Hungarian Salesian, educator and printer who worked with young people under a difficult political regime. He was persecuted and executed in 1953 because of his religious commitment under the Communist regime. His courage in defending the faith and his discreet but effective work with young people in times of repression are a model for me.

What is your message to young people about missionary choice and vocation?

Dear young people, listen deeply to the call of your heart and be open to what God wants to achieve through you. The missionary vocation is a path of love, service and transformation, not only for others, but also for oneself. If you feel the desire to serve others, especially the most vulnerable, do not be afraid to answer this call! Be brave in your choices, open to God’s will, and ready to love without reservation! This is how you will find your true vocation and perhaps the deep joy of being missionaries for Christ and for others.

Thank you!
