Can you introduce yourself?
My name is Hervé Kaputa, I have been a Salesian of Don Bosco since 2009 and a priest since 2018, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Salesian Province of Central Africa (AFC). I am currently a missionary in the Salesian Province of the Antilles (ANT), specifically in Cuba.
What inspired you to make this choice to become a missionary?
As a student at a Salesian school in Lubumbashi, both elementary and middle school, I had the opportunity to meet many Salesian and Congolese missionaries who have taught us a lot and who have given us their time and knowledge. Many of them died in our land. Years later I said to myself: why not do like them, for these young people who need me as a Salesian? And during my initial formation I began to discern to know what God wanted from me.
Are you happy with where you are going? Do you have any fears or concerns about your destination, culture and people?
I have already been in my mission land for 1 year and 5 months, which is precisely the Salesian Province of the Antilles. It is true that, when I learned of my destination, I had a double feeling of joy but also of fear, especially of the unknown. Once I arrived, however, I found almost the opposite of what I expected. I am having a wonderful experience with other wonderful Salesians and a warm and welcoming people. I am experiencing the universality of the Church, but above all of the Congregation. Don Bosco is a great saint.
How did your family, friends, and confreres react when you told them about missionary life?
There was a bit of sadness, knowing that I would be away physically. But since they are aware that this is a noble cause, the smile soon returned, accompanied by the hope of seeing each other again.
What are your plans and dreams for missionary life?
As a missionary project, I say - and it is my prayer every day - that the Lord will always take me where people need a little smile, a little hope in life, and especially where there is a thirst for His Word and the Sacraments. In Cuba I have experienced this and I always say "thank you, Lord".
Do you have some great missionary role models in mind whose lifestyle you would like to follow?
Jesus is the model par excellence, because he has gone through all the trials of life, showing us that with God nothing is impossible. But I was edified by the life of Salesian Brother Honorato Alonso, who is still alive; also Piet Homel; Baba Louis Van Dick and Bro. Luc Conpernoel, who surely pray for our Province, in Heaven, where they are with Don Bosco.
What is your message to young people about missionary choice and vocation?
As advice to young people I say: never hesitate when the Lord calls you. Don Bosco wants us everywhere in the world. Let us cast our nets into the sea and let us always trust in God.
