BOOKS

This book is a short biography of the “Gentle Saint’ who is the patron and namesake of the Salesians of Don Bosco, written by Fr Eunan McDonnell SDB, who currently holds the office of Provincial of the Irish Province.

Spiritual accompaniment and discernment played a key role both in pedagogy and in the history of the Salesian family. St Francis de Sales and Don Bosco were great spiritual directors of their time. Their expertise in this area is evident in their practice and thought.

Education is not only a matter of instruction and the acquisition of skills. We must be concerned with the formation of intelligence, of freedom, of the capacity to love and to do good to others. The book, by Salesian Father Carlo Nanni, SDB offers an outline of the origin and development of Don Bosco's educational preventive system and how it is applied in our society to meet the needs of young people facing contemporary issues.

Gerry O’Shaughnessy, SDB, surveys the influences and legacies of the six Popes of the modern era, from Pius XII to Francis. In this fascinating book, Gerry explores the impact of the First and Second World Wars, changes to the Mass, and the challenges in Church and society faced by our most recent Popes. Each chapter ends with a set of questions for reflection, challenging the reader to consider how we as individuals and as parishes respond to aspects of the Gospel-based guidance from each of the Holy Fathers, and engage with pastoral work.
