Ecuador – The ETSA Education Unit celebrates Shuar Nationality Day
Bomboiza, Ecuador – January 2025 – Friday, 17 January, the Bilingual Intercultural Educational Unit "ETSA" celebrated the "Shuara Tsawantri Cultural Day", or Shuar Nationality Day, an event commemorating the birth of the Shuar Federation. The event began with the Eucharist presided over by Fr José Delporte SDB, in the Shuar language, before many civil, social and governmental authorities who recognised the institution's commitment to strengthening the cultural identity of young people. The programme also included the presentation of myths and stories of the oral tradition, as a valuable reflection of the Shuar cultural heritage. In addition, a taste of local gastronomy was offered, traditional cultural games were organised and students who distinguished themselves for their academic performance during the first quarter of classes were rewarded. In the sixties, the Shuar people faced serious threats of colonisation which urged the indigenous leaders and Salesian missionaries to found the Federation, which came into being as a non-profit and apolitical organisation dedicated to the human and social advancement of the Shuar population and the preservation of its territory and cultural identity.
