The Covid emergency is over, but the alarm remains for children

Despite the Covid emergency being over, alarm remains over the worsening conditions of children, especially those living in areas affected by poverty or war.

The pandemic, Save The Children estimates, has driven around 100 million children into poverty.

The education of almost a billion and a half children has come to a screeching halt, due to Covid-19.

These are alarming figures, considering that even before the pandemic there were 258 million children who did not have access to education, practically one sixth of the total school-age population.

In addition, long periods of school closure had serious consequences for mental health. Among those whose schools were closed for one to four weeks, 62% reported an increase in negative feelings; this percentage rises to 96% for those whose schools were closed for 17 to 19 weeks.

Given the high number of children who do not have access to good quality education, it is predicted that globally, by 2030, 20% of 14-24 year olds and 30% of adults will be unable to read.
