Religious freedom is violated in one out of three countries: this is what the 16th report of Aid to the Church in Need highlights

On 22 June, the 16th report of the Pontifical Foundation 'Aid to the Church in Need' was presented in Rome, showing that religious freedom is violated in one out of three countries around the world.

In other words, more than 60 countries around the world have registered forms of religiously based persecution or discrimination and an estimated 325 million Christians are persecuted.

15% of countries around the world suffer discrimination, 24% suffer extreme forms of persecution, while 22% of countries are under observation. Unfortunately, Africa is the continent with the highest percentage of violence.

Since 2021, in a good 40 countries there have been murders or kidnappings for reasons of faith and in 34 countries religious properties or places of worship have been attacked or damaged.

The situation, if we look at estimates for 2022, has worsened in 47 countries classified and has only improved in 9 countries.

The full report, infographics and fact sheets for every country in the world are available on the Aid to the Church in Need website.
