RMG - To new Provincial Economers: "Let us not be overwhelmed by material things"

11 May 2016

(ANS - Rome) - "Remember that we have to work for young people and the service of man, so that justice may triumph in all areas". So said Bro. Jean Paul Muller, Economer General of the Salesian Congregation, to the Provincial Economers of 24 provinces of the Salesian world. A meeting to update and inform Salesians recently appointed as Provincial Economers has just ended.

Bro. Muller addressed the new Economers and recalled that "the Economer is immediately responsible for the administration of the temporal goods of a religious house, dependent on the Rector and his Council. He carries out his service in a spirit of charity and poverty."

The meeting lasted a week. In addition to briefings, the Economers enjoyed moments of sharing and had the chance to visit Rome and the Vatican, passing through the Holy Door of St. Peter’s and ending the week with Mass in the Catacombs of San Callistus.

It was also pointed out that "we live in a very difficult period of history, because the human situation is getting worse. New walls are being built, many problems are being ignored, and within this 'World Structure’ there are the financiers of the world, each with large challenges. Among the many problems are the problem of government in Venezuela, the war situation in Syria, poverty in Africa, and the great differences that exist in India.

These are challenges that open up new vistas of service, but, the Economer General concluded: “let us not be overwhelmed by material things, we are not managers, we are God’s shepherds."

The participants were J. Njuguna (AGL), D. Antúnez (ARN) No Vicent de Paul (ATE), R. Villazón (BOL), D. da Cunha (BRE), S. Michal (CEP), NC Yuen (CIN), S. Yeung (CIN), T. Sutalo (CRO), Jacques C. (HAI), M. Balma (ICP), M. Palacka (IND), G. Payamthadathil (INK), J. Kuzhikottayil (INN), J. Thyrniang (INS), F. Mellawarachchy (KCL), L. Mendoza (MOR), J. Rajoy ( MOZ), E. Sein (MYM), R. Thu (MYM), C. Mykhaylo (UKR), J. Davila (VEN), N. Hoang (VIE), and W. Thyrniang (ZMB).

At the end of an intense week of updating and studying the documents and economic procedures, they were thanked for their presence.
