Italy – Salesian Artistic Workshops to counter educational poverty

05 May 2016

(ANS - Rome) - To educate poorer young people in art, music and theatre, the Salesians in Italy have come up with many practical projects to ensure that art becomes an instrument of development for children, teenagers and young people.

One such project is called "Thabit: even the stars are welcoming", a theatre workshop sponsored by MetaCometa Onlus at Giarre, near Catania. It involves children aged 9 to 16 producing a real show: they write the script, decide on the costumes and scenery, and operate the light and sound effects.

In Casale Monferrato in Alessandria, the Harambee accommodation centre has started a photography workshop for immigrants and teenagers from socially disadvantaged backgrounds. The result was a photographic exhibition in which the young people were able to tell their story and display their vision of the future.

Music also features with the so-called "S(c)ala di Note” project at La Spezia. There they have a youth orchestra consisting of forty children and teenagers who attend the Don Bosco Oratory and the Traghetto Day Centre.

The relationship between the Salesians and the arts goes back to Don Bosco himself. He was the author of plays and stories for young people and he promoted the theatre as a practical educational means.

These and many other projects are supported by the organization “Salesiani per il Sociale – Federazione SCS/CNOS”
