Myanmar - Seminar for translators of East Asia-Oceania Region starts today

23 August 2019

(ANS - Anisakan) - The second Seminar for translators of the East Asia-Oceania Region begins today, 23 August, with Salesians and members of the Salesian Family of all the Region's Provinces participating. The Seminar's main objective is to assist, support and train Salesian translators in their ministry, not an easy one, but extremely important. The result emerging from this experience shall be contained in the draft of the future "Salesian Translators Handbook", the manual of the Salesian translator.

After the first Seminar, which took place in Vietnam in October 2014, about 33 Salesian translators are now meeting in Myanmar to share their experiences, expectations and the main results achieved in these past five years.

The materials used in this seminar are already available on the "Boscolink" website. It is a "package" that contains a Salesian glossary (a set of 450 Salesian terms), interviews, a survey on what has been done since 2014 and the working document that will be used this year. In this way, even those who cannot attend the Seminar, will be able to take advantage of all the materials available.

The Rector Major, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, sent a video message to the participants for the occasion. "I am really happy with initiatives like these," said the Rector Major. "They are the fruit of a profound and rich vision. They are the result of the commitment of many people, brothers and sisters who translate our messages, good and true news. Doing it in so many languages really means having a vision, because if the message arrives and is understandable, then it will have a great impact. We have more than one hundred mother tongues in the Region. Continuing to grow with this sensitivity and investing time and energy, as you do now in this meeting of translators, is a very important thing to do."

The Successor of Don Bosco then encouraged the translators to continue their work, which is often silent and anonymous, but which is of vital importance for the whole Congregation. Translating and disseminating news and messages from all over the world is indeed good for young people and their families and contributes to bringing boys and girls closer to the Lord and the Gospel.
