United States - Another medal for the "Space Washing Machine" of Verona Don Bosco at "Global Innovation Award 2019"

12 July 2019

(ANS - San José) - The "Wemit" project created by the students of the "Don Bosco" Institute of Verona - or the "Space Washing Machine", as it is popularly called - was judged the world's second best invention of the year by the judges of the "Global Innovation Award", an award sponsored by the big companies of Silicon Valley. The result of the ingenuity of the "iDB Tech-No-Logic Team" of the "Don Bosco" of Verona, the project has thus achieved a new success, after one recorded last April at the world science and robotics competition, the FIRST*LEGO League World Championship.

After the victory at the robotics world championships on April 20th in Houston, Texas, in which they beat the 108 finalist teams with the maximum score in all categories (scientific project, innovation, presentation capacities and teamwork), in this new competition - the most prestigious ever - the technical juries evaluated the invention's technical-scientific congruence, its feasibility, utility and novelty, an invention designed to wash astronauts' clothes in the absence of gravity and without water.

In a few words, the transition between the world robotics championship and the "Global Innovation Award" is from "project" to "a true and proper prototyped invention."

There were 40,000 competing teams and only 20 worldwide were selected for the California final, celebrated last July 2 in San José. The winners of the competition were the "Franco Droid", a Brazilian team that created a solution to serve female astronauts to avoiding infection in spaceships; ex-aequo with the "space washing machine" came the project "Growing Food", of an American team from Maryland, related to the cultivation of vegetables for astronauts.

The iDB Tech-No-Logic Team is composed of 5 male students and 3 female students from the 4th Year of the Scientific and Applied Sciences Lyceum, namely Pietro Formenti, Pietro Fornalè, Beatrice Ligozzi, Alessio Montignani, Filippo Oliosi, Camilla Salvagno, Paolo Venturini and Maddalena Zuccato. They were guided by prof. Luca Zanetti, and assisted by two other teachers: Anna Baruzzi and Andrea Materassi. The result, certainly due to the genius and commitment of the students, was certainly also favored by the setting and support of the school that made human resources, classrooms, labs and technologies available to them even outside the normal lesson times and the traditional ministerial school curricula.
