Spain - Conclusion of the Congress of Mercy at Tibidabo

08 April 2016

(ANS - Barcelona) - In 1881 the Salesians arrived in Spain, when Don Bosco was the promoter of his work and great traveller in search of help for his poor children. As he was travelling around Spain, an incident took place on 5 May 1886 that we can call historic. Among the hills of Barcelona, one of the highest is the hill called "Tibidabo".  To commemorate his visit some famous people asked Don Bosco to build a shrine to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Don Bosco was touched by their request and replied: "Yes, gentlemen, with your help a shrine dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus will soon be erected on this mountain." It was in this shrine that Congress of Mercy concluded.

This Congress has made Barcelona a centre of worship and devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus who is the face of the Father’s Mercy. In the Expiatory Temple on Tibidabo, Archbishop Juan Jose Ornella of Barcelona presided at the final Eucharist of the Congress entitled  Cor Jesu, vultus Misericordiae, held in Barcelona and centred on the teachings of St Teresa of the Child Jesus on the theme of the Merciful Love of God.

To become apostles of mercy the Archbishop of Barcelona invited the faithful to follow the example of St Teresa of the Child Jesus and her parents. The presence of their relics was, in this sense, an attraction for many of the faithful. The celebrations were also held in the Basilica of the Mercé in Balmesiana.

The Congress Coordinator was Dr Enrique Martínez, Secretary of the Istituzione Balmesiana. The Congress was organized jointly by the Apostleship of Prayer, the Institute of St Thomas in Balmesiana, the Temple of the Sacred Heart at Tibidabo, the Basilica of Our Lady de la Merce in Barcelona, the International Institute of the Heart of Christ and the Theology Courses of the Heart of Jesus in Toledo and Getafe.

The congress on Cor Jesu, vultus Misericordiae has made Barcelona once again a spiritual centre for worship and devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the face of the Father’s Mercy.
