A Warm Welcome in the Salesian Spirit
The event took place at the Salesian house in Essen, a venue that has often hosted similar initiatives. With the presence of Fr. Hatto Hatzfeld, Rector of the house, and other members of the Salesian community, the participants were welcomed into an atmosphere of warmth and family-like support.
The Presence of Fr. Simon Zakerian and Fr. Pier Jabloyan
The gathering was enriched by the participation of Fr. Simon Zakerian, Provincial Superior of the Salesians of the Middle East (MOR), and Fr. Pier Jabloyan, Rector of the Salesian community in Aleppo. Their presence carried deep symbolic value, highlighting the strong bond among Salesian communities, especially those operating in challenging contexts. Through their testimonies and pastoral support, they offered a powerful message of God's love and the resilience of hope, demonstrating that faith can overcome any barrier.
“Hope That Warms the Heart” – A Theme for Life
The central theme of the gathering, "Hope That Warms the Heart," was inspired by the biblical passage of Jesus meeting the disciples on the road to Emmaus. This theme deeply resonated with the Syrian and Iraqi families, who have endured years of hardship but have always drawn strength from faith and hope. The meeting encouraged reflection on how hope not only serves as a light in difficult times but also as a transformative force in daily life.
A Program Filled with Encounters and Salesian Spirituality
The event was designed to offer a blend of spirituality, games, and reflection. The day began with a warm welcome and registration, followed by an icebreaker game to help participants connect. Lively animation and music created a joyful and engaging atmosphere.
The highlight of the day was the Sunday Mass, marking the First Sunday of Lent. This celebration carried deep spiritual significance, allowing participants to embrace the Lenten journey with renewed awareness. A special prayer for peace in the Middle East was offered as the first intention during the Prayers of the Faithful.
The gathering concluded with a shared meal, providing an opportunity to strengthen bonds among attendees. A final group photo symbolically captured the event, preserving a cherished moment of unity and fellowship.
An Experience of Hope and Brotherhood
The youth and family gathering for the Syrian and Iraqi diaspora, organized by the Salesians of the Middle East in Essen, was far more than just an event—it was an experience of hope, fraternity, and solidarity. It allowed young people and families to share moments of spirituality and personal growth at a time when the Middle East faces ongoing difficulties and instability.
This meeting proved that even in challenging times, hope remains a powerful force that can warm hearts and illuminate the path forward. With faith and God's love as their guide, participants left with renewed strength to continue their journey in life.
