Mali – Education as a tool for change

06 February 2025

(ANS - Touba) - In a context of instability and difficulty of access to education, 150 young people from Touba - a small village in the south of Mali, almost on the border with Burkina Faso - have been able to participate in a socio-educational project that has strengthened their formation and personal development. The initiative, promoted by the Salesian Bosco Global NGO, with the support of the Government of the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands in Spain, has made it possible to improve the facilities and activities of the Saint Jean Bosco youth centre and school complex, and to expand formation opportunities, both academic and informal, for the young people of this rural community.

The youth centre has been developed as a safe space where children and young people can learn, share and grow in an environment of trust. Thanks to the project, educational, cultural and sports activities have been implemented that have strengthened their personal, social and collective capacities. In addition, workshops on intercultural dialogue, human rights awareness, a culture of peace and co-education were conducted in the Sant Francesc de Sales Salesian educational community and youth centre, promoting the participation of young people in building a more just and cohesive society.

One of the main initiatives of the project was the renovation and expansion of the youth centre, with the construction of a new multi-purpose hall that improved the conditions of the space and allowed it to accommodate more young people. This renovation facilitated the implementation of new training activities and created a more suitable environment for their development.

In addition, the centre achieved energy self-sufficiency thanks to the installation of 12 solar panels, a crucial resource in a region where power outages are frequent and affect the functioning of activities. Thanks to this improvement, a stable electricity supply has been guaranteed, benefiting not only the centre's users, but also the community's entire environmental sustainability.

At the same time, the project placed special emphasis on the empowerment of girls, who are often in a more vulnerable situation. At least 30 girls participated in specific events where they learned about their rights and acquired professional skills to improve their future opportunities. These events have included basic literacy, training in income-generating activities such as soap and oil production, and meeting spaces to strengthen their participation in community life.

This approach has been instrumental in breaking down barriers of inequality and encouraging women's participation in all areas of the centre, creating a space where they feel valued and can express their opinions without inhibition.

The results of the project were very positive. Eighty per cent of the young participants have improved their educational and social skills and rate the youth centre as a place that offers them support and tools to face the future with more confidence and security. Young people's awareness of their rights and their active role in society was also strengthened, promoting a more engaged citizenship.

‘The Touba experience demonstrates the importance of continuing to invest in education and in spaces that foster the personal and collective growth of young people. Bosco Global and the local Salesian community reaffirm our commitment to continue working to ensure that the youth of Touba have access to quality education and opportunities that allow them to build a better future,’ the project's promoters state emphatically.

They conclude: ‘It is also noteworthy that this project was made possible thanks to the support of the Government of the Balearic Islands, an example of the value of International Cooperation in transforming realities and offering new opportunities to the most vulnerable communities’.
